Rocket Lab USA (NASDAQ: RKLB) has been the standout performer in the aerospace sector this quarter, rallying 164% from its April 7 low of $14.71 to $38.88. The company now commands a market capitalization of $17.9 billion.
On June 22, Rocket Lab officially joins the Nasdaq 100, triggering mandatory buying from index funds. Eight days later, on June 30, the company was promoted to the Russell 1000 from the Russell 2000. For a stock that gained 360% in 2024 and is now up 174% year-to-date, the index inclusions represent institutional validation.
From Rockets to Revenue
Rocket Lab has completed 68 successful Electron rocket launches, delivering more than 227 satellites to orbit. Revenue has grown from $62 million in 2021 to $436 million in 2024 — a seven-fold increase. Wall Street consensus projects $599 million for 2025, representing 37% year-over-year growth.
On May 27, Rocket Lab closed its $275 million acquisition of GEOST, a Tucson-based maker of satellite sensor payloads for national security missions. The deal marks the company's first direct entry into the satellite payload industry.
Defense Dollars Flow In
Rocket Lab was selected for the US Space Force's NSSL Phase 3 program with a $5 million task order. The pipeline tells the real story: the program is worth up to $5.6 billion. Winning a seat puts Rocket Lab alongside ULA and SpaceX as a certified national security launch provider.
The Bull Case
Rocket Lab is the clear number-two Western launch provider behind SpaceX. It has a proven Electron track record, a growing spacecraft business, and now a pathway into the high-margin defense sector. The global space economy hit $415 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $944 billion by 2033.
The Bear Case
SpaceX controls roughly 86% of global upmass to orbit. Neutron rocket development could face delays and cost overruns, and the program may need additional capital raises. At $17.9 billion, Rocket Lab trades at roughly 30 times projected 2025 revenue — a multiple that leaves little room for disappointment.
